Reason For West Ham United vs Aston Villa Predictions

  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in seven of Aston Villa’s last nine league games.
  • West Ham and Aston Villa drew 0-0 earlier in the season.
  • Villa are unbeaten in three games ahead of their trip to the London Stadium.
  • Villa drew 1-1 in two of their last three away fixtures.

Aston Villa’s day of destiny

Having looked dead and buried just a couple of weeks ago, Aston Villa’s haul of seven points from their last three games has pushed them to the brink of Premier League survival.

A win for Dean Smith’s Villains, in what could prove to be Jack Grealish’s last game for the club, would guarantee their place in the top flight for another season, but with relegation rivals Bournemouth and Watford finishing with tough games at Everton and Arsenal respectively, Villa could still lose and stay up.

Villa had gone a dismal 10 games without winning before their late turnaround, which they kicked off with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on July 12. A useful point at Everton followed quickly after before the Midlanders gave their hopes a massive boost with a hugely unexpected 1-0 triumph over Arsenal on Tuesday evening.

West Ham’s safety confirmed

West Ham meanwhile, can get the deckchairs out on Sunday, having taken a survival confirming point in impressive style at Old Trafford against Man Utd on Wednesday evening.

The Irons had Paul Pogba to thank for their penalty kick opener, though West Ham played on the front foot for much of the game in Manchester, and were well worth their share of the spoils.

West Ham’s draw at the Theatre of Dreams also extended their unbeaten run to three games, and the Hammers were beaten just once in their last six Premier League run outs overall during a period where the potential of a talented group of players finally showed signs of being released.

Few goals likely in the capital

With West Ham likely to have one eye on the summer holidays and Villa expected to be racked with nerves on Sunday, we expect goals to be thin on the ground at the London Stadium.

Villa’s matches have been low on excitement for an extended period now, with a tightening of their defence leading to a reduction in attacking threat at the other end.

Under 2.5 goals were scored in seven of Villa’s last nine Premier League matches, with the net rippling just 1.7 times per 90 minutes on average across those same fixtures.

Away from Villa Park, Dean Smith’s men saw under 2.5 goals in five of their last seven assignments, and with their place in the Premier League on the line, the Villains will almost certainly adopt a cautious approach again on Sunday.

West Ham and Aston Villa played out a drab 0-0 stalemate when they faced off in their reverse league fixture in September, and the landscape suggests a similarly muted encounter should be expected in Sunday’s rematch.

With that considered, the under 2.5 goals market holds plenty of value for Sunday’s game, while our correct score prediction forecasts another draw between the teams with a 1-1 finish.

A point might not be enough to save Villa’s skins if Watford and Bournemouth pull off unexpected results elsewhere, though a draw might be the best the Villains can muster against a confidence West Ham outfit.

Villa drew two of their last three away games by that scoreline, while West Ham conceded exactly one goal in three of their last four Premier League fixtures.

Anytime Goalscorer Tip: Michail Antonio

The calmness Michail Antonio showed when rolling his spot kick past the ailing David de Gea on Wednesday evening highlighted just how confident the Hammers hitman is at present.

With eight goals in his last six appearances for the Irons, Antonio is in the form of his life, and the versatile forward will be his team’s most threatening attacking weapon again on Sunday.

Having already bagged 10 goals this term, the 30-year-old has already hit a career high Premier League total for the campaign, though Antonio will be targeting more goals before the final whistle is blown on the season.

West Ham vs Aston Villa team news

Robert Snodgrass and Ryan Fredericks look set to miss out again for West Ham, while Jarrod Bowen and Aaron Cressweell, who both picked up knocks at Old Trafford on Wednesday, are currently being assessed.

David Moyes would like to keep faith the same XI that has been serving him so well in recent weeks, though a few changes to frehen things up could be needed after their mid-week exploits.

West Ham predicted line-up: Fabianski – Johnson, Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell – Rice, Soucek, Noble – Bowen, Fornals, Antonio

Long-term injury absentees Wesley and Tom Heaton are joined in the treatment room by Ahmed El Mohamady and Bjorn Engels this week, while Neil Taylor is also struggling with a hamstring complaint.

After a fine showing against Arsenal, Dean Smith will want to keep changes to a minium this weekend, though Keinan Davis is pushign to start again ahead of the disappointing Mbwana Samatta.

Aston Villa predicted line-up: Reina – Guilbert, Ngoyo, Mings, Targett – Luiz, McGinn, Hourihane – Trezeguet, Grealish, Samatta
