Reason For Wigan vs Hull City Predictions

  • Wigan have lost only one of their last 12 league matches
  • Hull have suffered three consecutive league defeats
  • Wigan have kept clean sheets in nine of their last ten league matches

Resilient Wigan can claim maximum points

With a 12-point deduction looming large on Wigan, this showdown with Hull this could have a big say on the relegation picture and it is a test the Latics can pass with flying colours.

The Latics have been in excellent form since the season’s resumption, winning four of their six games and drawing another with Barnsley despite being reduced to ten men.

Wigan’s only defeat in that time came against a rampant Brentford, who are on a seven-game winning streak, and they have kept clean sheets in each of their other five matches, winning to nil at home to Blackburn, Stoke and QPR.

In fact, Wigan have now lost only one of their last 12 league contests and they would have been on course for a top-half finish had it not been for this 12-point sanction.

With nine clean sheets in their last ten games, there are fewer defences in the second tier as resilient as Paul Cook’s men and that may give them the advantage against a Hull side who are third from bottom and under serious pressure after three consecutive defeats.

Hull should be fearing the worst

Hull had shown some signs of a revival following the Championship’s restart with four points from meetings with Birmingham and Middlesbrough but three consecutive defeats have put them at serious risk of relegation.

The January departures of Kamil Grosicki and Jarrod Bowen, who left for West Brom and West Ham respectively, severely reduced the Tigers’ attacking quality and it is something they have never really recovered from.

The injury to influential midfielder Herbie Kane, who returned to parent club Liverpool after being ruled out for the season, has reduced their creativity even further and defensively they are extremely suspect.

Hull, who have collected only two points from their last eight away league games, have been breached 19 times in their last six road contests, conceding five at Stoke, four at West Brom and three times in a draw at Birmingham since March.

The Tigers have lost home meetings with Charlton and Millwall, as well as losing at Bristol City and West Brom, in four of their six games since the season’s return and their survival hopes could suffer another setback at Wigan.

Defensively-minded Latics hold the clues

Wigan have kept clean sheets in nine of their last ten league matches and we predict them to keep Hull at bay.

The stakes are high at the DW Stadium, so chances may be few and far between, and Wigan’s hardy defence can stand strong.

Cook’s hosts have not conceded in any of their last five home league games and having won 1-0 at home to QPR in their last DW Stadium outing, our prediction is for them to emulate that scoreline here. The Tigers have suffered 1-0 defeats against Charlton and Hull since the season restarted.
