Wigan vs Lincoln City Predictions

  • Wigan have the best defensive record in League One with only nine goals conceded through 13 games.
  • Lincoln City have the best defensive record in the bottom half of the table and the eighth best overall.
  • Wigan have scored fewer goals at home (nine) than on their travels (15) this season.

Goals could be scarce as two solid sides meet

Wigan Athletic are a curious case of a team that is performing much better away than at home this season, which is why Tuesday’s clash with Lincoln City at the DW Stadium may not be as straightforward as it seems.

Leam Richardson’s Latics have the best defensive record in the division and are scoring goals at an overall rate of two per match – but they have lost their last two games on home turf.

They aren’t a counter-attacking side that sit deep and need opponents to come onto them to thrive, but their average shot totals are among the seven worst in the division at home while putting them sixth best of League One away sides.

Imps could impede Latics’ promotion push

Those stats are somewhat off-putting when assessing their value as an odds-on favourite to win Tuesday’s contest against a Lincoln side that have lost only one of their last four away games in this division.

It is less than a month since the Imps won at eighth-placed Burton Albion and they grabbed a draw at Hillsborough against a strong Sheffield Wednesday side just last Saturday. Michael Appleton’s side are strong at the back and we believe they can ensure there are relatively few chances on offer to the hosts. Likewise they are up against the best defensive team in League One, so an ‘unders’ bet looks value at the price.

The correct score prediction of 1-1 reflects Lincoln’s record of having conceded more than once in only two of their seven away league games while Wigan have only scored more than one goal in two of their seven home clashes.
