Reason For Wigan vs Preston Predictions

  • No Championship team has scored less home goals than Wigan, who’ve notched just 14 at DW Stadium this term.
  • Preston are the Championship’s lowest scoring travelling team this season.
  • Both teams have scored in just 36% of Preston’s away games in the Championship this season.

Latics going well

Wigan, who’re currently two points shy of safety, remain in an unflattering position, though it’s fair to say that Paul Cook’s men have improved slightly of late. The Latics come into this match off the back of two wins, and it’s not as if they’ve beaten weak teams either. They first got the better of Sheffield Wednesday, who’re no mugs, while they followed up by taking all three points at Elland Road, knocking Leeds off top spot as a result. Such form should leave Saturday’s hosts feeling confident.

DW Stadium hasn’t been an easy place to go in recent times, though that doesn’t mean that Wigan have won all that often at home. Not the easiest side to beat in front of their own fans, the Latics have lost just one of their last five at home but they’ve only won once during that time. A lack of goals is the main reason behind Wigan’s lack of home wins. They’ve scored in four of their last five at home, but have only scored more than once in one of those five, while prior to notching twice against Wednesday recently, they went nine home games without notching multiple times.

Visitors tough nut to crack

Like Wigan at home, Preston have found it tough to impose themselves on the road, but they too are tough to beat. Saturday’s visitors, who’re just three points shy of the top six, have avoided defeat in each of their last four on the road.

Again, like the Latics, Alex Neil’s men haven’t set the world alight in terms of goals scored away from home. Despite scoring a respectable four in their last three on the road, Preston have scored the fewest travelling goals in the division. Fortunately, they’ve not conceded too many. No team outside the top six has conceded fewer away goals than Preston, who’ve given away a more than respectable average of 1.14.

Lack of goals forecast

What stands out about this pair is their lack of goals. The fact that they’ve both been tough to beat in their respective home and away games of late also adds to the likelihood of a tight match. In the betting, ‘Both Teams to Score – NO’ stands out as a viable option. Wigan are the lowest scoring home team in the division, while Preston are the lowest scoring away side. Both have also done a good job of keeping things relatively tight of late. That both teams rank in the bottom half when it comes to shots for and shots on target for also makes a low-scoring affair appeal, as does the fact that both teams have scored in just 43% of their combined respective home and away matches.
