      Wolves vs Sheffield United Predictions

      • Wolves and Sheffield United are separated by just one point as we head into this match.
      • Wolves are unbeaten in their last eight Premier League matches, winning their last two in a row.
      • Both teams have scored in five of Wolves’ six home Premier League games this season and in four of Sheffield United’s six away games.

Wolves fend off second season syndrome

Wolves booked their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League with a game to spare on Thursday as they played out a 3-3 thriller at Sporting Braga. They trailed thanks to an early goal from the Portuguese hosts but turned it around to go into half-time 3-1 to the good. A toothless second half saw them concede twice more though, leaving them on the back foot in the race for the top spot in their group.

Now, their attentions turn back to the Premier League. They come into this match in decent shape, unbeaten in eight league matches and sitting pretty in 5th position. They are some seven points adrift of an unlikely top four position, but it’s undoubtedly been an impressive season so far as they juggle domestic and continental responsibilities.

Earlier in the season there were some doubts about their ability to compete on both fronts, but recently those doubts have been swept away by a wave of optimism. The Midlands club have won their last two league outings and managed a shock 2-0 win over Manchester City back in October, so there certainly doesn’t seem to be any sign of second season syndrome surfacing.

Overachieving Blades set to come under threat

Sheffield United weren’t given much of a chance at the start of this season, but Chris Wilder has done a stunning job with the Blades and they’re already well on course to remain in the top flight.

In fact, the visitors are just a point behind Wolves in 6th place coming into this game. However, it’s not all sunshine and roses for the visitors. Their defence looked decidedly shaky against Manchester United last weekend and they’re facing a Wolves side that have had a massive 34 attempts on goal in their last two outings.

Sheffield United have only managed two clean sheets away from home this term, and those came against two of the lowest scoring teams in Watford and Everton. They’ll be facing a much more potent attacking side on Sunday, although it’s worth remembering that the Blades themselves have only failed to score once on the road.

      Goals at both ends expected

Wolves built their success last season around a solid back line, and while they’re far from a defensive catastrophe this term they do struggle to keep clean sheets. In fact, they haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last five league games and only one of their six home Premier League outings has resulted in a shut out.

They do tend to make up for this going forward though, failing to score in none of their home games and averaging a respectable 1.5 goals per game at Molineux. Combined with Sheffield United’s record, we think backing Both Teams to Score is a very solid option on Sunday.

In the end, we’re backing the home side to topple Sheffield United’s unbeaten away record. The Blades have ridden their luck at times this season, and with Wolves in such good form we think a 2-1 win for the hosts is a good option.
