Wigan head to Wrexham for a televised EFL Cup fixture on Tuesday in what could be an entertaining affair.

The hosts were involved in an eight-goal thriller in their first EFL game since 2008 as they were beaten 5-3 at home by MK Dons.

Latics appeal as underdogs

Wigan claimed a 2-1 win over pre-season title favourites Derby County and appeal at a big price to back that up with a victory on Tuesday.

The Latics have endured a difficult period both on and off the pitch but it is worth remembering they were playing in the Championship last season, while Wrexham have come up from the National League.

The Red Dragons’ loss to MK Dons suggests they still have to get used to the rigours of EFL football, and they may find Wigan a bit too good.

James McClean’s move from Wigan to Wrexham does add a bit of intrigue to this fixture and he could make his debut for the Welsh outfit against his former employers on Tuesday but Wigan still look the best bet.

The Latics are unbeaten in their last five games stretching back to last year’s Championship campaign, so at a big price they look very backable here.

Wrexham tend to be involved in high-scoring games and four of their last five outings at the Racecourse Ground have produced over 3.5 goals.

Both teams have scored in three of Wigan’s last four fixtures and there is a good chance this will be an end-to-end affair between two sides who feel they have points to prove for different reasons. Taking that into account, an ambitious punt on a 3-2 win for the visitors appeals for correct score bettors.

Players have a habit of haunting their former employers so if he is handed a starting spot, McClean could be one to watch out for as an anytime scorer on that basis alone.
