Barnsley vs AFC Wimbledon Predictions

After springing into life this season, winning each of their opening two fixtures in convincing fashion, Barnsley will be looking to continue building momentum when they welcome AFC Wimbledon, who’ve also made a pleasing start to the campaign, to Oakwell on Saturday afternoon.

Barnsley fans would’ve been hoping the Tykes’ opening-day victory wasn’t a flash in the pan, and as their side went to Valley Parade and comfortably beat a team who played very well on match-day one, they may just have got what they were hoping for. Daniel Stendel’s men delivered another commanding performance, especially in the final third, as they brushed aside a reasonably useful Bradford side.

Just as they did against Oxford on match-day one, Barnsley started quickly against the Yorkshire rivals; they showed attacking intent, while their end-product certainly wasn’t lacking. What’s more, the Tykes came under very little pressure at the back. With another pleasing performance under their belts, the hosts will go into this third league match full of confidence.

Though less explosive, Wimbledon have also made a pleasing start to the campaign. They beat Fleetwood on their travels first time out, while a 0-0 draw at home against Coventry last time out wasn’t the worst result. As was likely to be the case, Neal Ardley’s men give little away, while they’re certainly not easy to beat. The Dons are one of just two teams to have avoided conceding so far this season. Barnsley are the other one, so unless the pair draw 0-0 at the weekend, the Dons, if they get their tactics right at Oakwell, could go into match-day four as the only team in the division to keep three consecutive clean sheets.

They’re unlikely to be flashiest side, while they probably won’t go mad in terms of goals scored this season, though Wimbledon are anything but easy to beat. Not only do they concede few goals, but they generally do a good job of nullifying their opponents. After the opening two matches, only three teams have conceded less shots than Ardley’s men, while only five have conceded less shots on target.

This is a match between the two best defensive teams in terms of goals conceded, though something should give. Wimbledon won’t be easy to break down, while they’re unlikely to be too adventurous as they try to stop an attack that is already starting to look menacing at this level. That said, in terms of overall quality, Barnsley have more of it, especially in the final third. It could be tight, and it’s unlikely to be anywhere near as convincing as their first two wins, but the hosts are backed to have enough about them to come out on top eventually. ‘Barnsley to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’ gets the nod at the prices.
