Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

Both teams have scored in three of Strasbourg’s last four matches and in five of the last six meetings between the clubs. Marseille have the fourth-highest expected goals in Ligue 1 away games this season, but also the seventh-highest expected goals against on the road.

Strasbourg 2-1

Reason for tip

Marseille have failed to score more than once in seven of their last eight away league games while Strasbourg have scored multiple goals in six of their last eight at home. They have won four of their last five Ligue 1 home games while OM have lost six of their last eight on the road, so take the hosts to edge this 2-1.

Le Classique win lifts Marseille’s mood

Strasbourg and Marseille played out a couple of tactically interesting, low-scoring duels last season but there is hope that Friday night’s clash might bring more goalmouth action.

The visitors will arrive in fine spirits after they knocked Paris Saint-Germain off the top of Ligue 1 on Monday with a 1-0 home victory in Le Classique. Nayef Aguerd capitalised on Lucas Chevalier’s flap to score the only goal on a night when Roberto de Zerbi was sent off for stepping onto the pitch and berating the referee.

The victory, which ends a run of seven straight defeats for OM in the fixture, should do wonders for confidence but they need to remember how many key attackers were missing for PSG.

Aubameyang and Emegha spearhead potent attacks

Strasbourg, meanwhile, moved into the top four and level on points with leaders Monaco thanks to a 3-2 win at Paris FC on Sunday. It should have been much more comfortable for Liam Rosenior’s side, but they have developed a habit of letting opponents back into matches when seemingly in control.

They looked vulnerable to crosses against Paris FC and may struggle to keep a clean sheet against a Marseille side that have good wingers and arch poacher Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the middle. Back both teams to score in this clash because Emanuel Emegha returned with a bang on Sunday and he could get the nod to start his first league match since the opening weekend.

Marseille have enough momentum and quality about them to boss this, but Rosenior concocted a plan to stifle De Zerbi’s side in the corresponding fixture last season and may have something up his sleeve again. Strasbourg have won four of their last five Ligue 1 home games while OM have lost six of their last eight on the road, so take the hosts to edge this 2-1.
