A 2-0 win over Arsenal at Wembley saw Manchester City win their ninth EFL Cup last season and the Citizens are 6/1 to go level with Liverpool as the most successful side in the competition’s history.

Beaten finalists Arsenal lead the markets at 7/2 despite having not won the trophy since 1993, but it is one of the other big hitters that could bring glory to the capital.

EFL Cup outright predictions

Chelsea to win at 11/2

Chelsea are priced up as second favourites to win their sixth EFL Cup and last season’s disappointment could play into Xabi Alonso’s hands as he searches for his first trophy at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues’ tenth-place finish leaves them without the juggling act of European football to contend with, and the big-spending side certainly have the squad depth to handle challenging on multiple fronts.

Alonso has a myriad of talented players at his disposal for a competition that often features rotated lineups among the Premier League’s biggest clubs, but that lack of continental commitments will also allow the Spaniard to field many of his stars in the latter stages of the competition.

And there may not even be the need for rotation. Alonso started Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, Estevao, Reece James and Maxence Lacroix against Luton in the last round of the EFL Cup, as well as bringing Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro off the bench.

Arsenal may have outclassed them on Sunday, but Chelsea had won each of their three games before that defeat and have looked scintillating going forward at times.

Premier League contention may be their main goal, but with a deep squad and few other commitments, they look well priced to win the first major trophy of the season.

Brentford to win at 25/1

Brentford have never won a major trophy, but they could follow in the footsteps of Crystal Palace and find cup glory after a solid start to the season.

The Bees finished eighth last season and, like Chelsea, missed out on European qualification, so their schedule is free to put plenty of their eggs in the EFL Cup basket.

They have started the season with two wins and two draws, including a 6-1 drubbing away to Birmingham in their first EFL Cup tie.

Mamadou Sangare is already looking like an excellent signing for the data-driven club and Igor Thiago is hoping to build on a phenomenal goalscoring season last year.

While many of the clubs around them underwent plenty of change through the summer, Brentford have been a largely stable presence and Keith Andrews could be the man to guide them to maiden silverware.
