Season review

Jurgen Klopp’s departure as Liverpool manager lowered expectations for their 2024/25 campaign, which Arne Slot ultimately blew out of the water.

The Dutchman arrived in the Premier League with an understated attitude, which was matched by a quiet summer transfer window. With little fanfare around them, the Reds’ title credentials weren’t taken seriously until they became the undeniable favourites.

In hindsight, Liverpool’s success is quite clear. They set the pace with seven wins from their first eight. A 2-2 draw with Arsenal in October temporarily knocked them off the top, but once Liverpool regained their lead, they were never in danger of being caught.

Their low expectations were partly due to Klopp’s final season fizzling out. However, his team harboured real hopes of a quadruple into mid-March, with fixture congestion hitting them hard.

Slot tweaked their approach, easing the pressing burden on Mo Salah. He also pushed Dominik Szoboszlai into a more advanced role.

Slot’s subtle changes helped, but there was clear overlap between Klopp’s farewell season and the Dutchman’s debut. In Vic Reeves-style, the two campaigns hit familiar notes, just not in the same order.

Liverpool picked up only two more points than they managed in Klopp’s final year, losing four times in each season. Incredibly, they ended up scoring 86 times and conceding 41 goals in back-to-back years.

The main change was clear in their underlying numbers, with their Expected Goals for and against both dropping. The Reds eased away from Klopp’s more chaotic attacking style, easing the burden defensively, reducing the toll on a squad which isn’t quite as deep as many of their Premier League rivals.

Key stat: Liverpool’s xG tally of 82.2 was far above any other Premier League side, while they topped all but Barcelona and PSG across Europe’s top five leagues

Transfer window preview

While Slot prioritised continuity in his first season, Liverpool have kicked into another gear in the transfer window.

The Reds’ only addition last term was a late gamble on Federico Chiesa, who started only one league game.

Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili joins in July for £25million, having agreed a move last year. A deal for full-back Jeremie Frimpong was announced shortly after Trent Alexander-Arnold departed for Real Madrid.

The Reds intend to keep spending, as they look to wrap up their business early. Frimpong’s former Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz is their big target, while the Reds are also linked with Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.

The champions’ spending could go as high as £200million as they bid to retain the title for the first time in 42 years.
