The Northern Trust winner prediction – Jon Rahm at 10/1
Jon Rahm has bounded back on to the PGA Tour after a month off and there must be every chance the refreshed Spanish brute makes an explosive start to the FedEx Cup playoffs in The Northern Trust.
Rahm opened with a round of 64 and went on to finish third on the only previous occasion he has tackled this week’s venue – Liberty National in New Jersey – so he has arrived back on the circuit with some positive course experience to draw upon too.
Rahm was forced to miss the Olympics after testing positive for Covid-19 for a second time, but he was completely symptom-free throughout and spent the time relaxing with his wife and newborn baby son instead.
There was an anger about Rahm in his pre-tournament media conference – he is fuming with the way Covid tests have impacted his season – and the rest of the FedEx Cup hopefuls must be quaking in their boots.
The world number one seems determined to put the icing on the cake of a Major-winning campaign by also claiming the FedEx Cup. Had he been allowed to finish the Memorial Tournament – having kicked clear of the field before his first positive Covid test – he would already be atop the FedEx standings.
Rahm was the most consistent performer in the 2021 Majors, finishing fifth in the Masters, eighth in the US PGA, first in the US Open and third in the Open, and would be a worthy FedEx Cup champion.
The Northern Trust outsider prediction – Collin Morikawa at 18/1
The main danger to Rahm at Liberty National may be Collin Morikawa, who lies first in the FedEx list. Morikawa was tailed off in his only previous visit to this track, but he had been a pro for only two months. This week he returns as world number three, bursting with self-belief.
