Crystal Palace made history at Wembley in May as they edged past Manchester City to lift the FA Cup, becoming the 45th winners of the oldest club competition in the world.
With an ultra-congested Premier League table and an increasingly small gap in quality between the teams in the top flight, many of those in the stodgy middle will be eyeing up a deep cup run as the third round kicks off on Friday.
FA Cup outright winner predictions
Arsenal to win the FA Cup at 6/1
A team from outside of the top flight has not won the FA Cup since West Ham in 1980, and only two second-tier teams have made it to the final since 1992, so the Premier League is the only logical starting point from a betting perspective.
Of the current crop, 16 have lifted the famous trophy, and Brighton, Bournemouth, Brentford, and Fulham are looking to join the Eagles in breaking their duck.
However, at the opposite end of the spectrum, record holders Arsenal look a tempting price to add to their 14 FA Cup titles.
The Gunners have been the standout team in English football this season, opening up a six-point gap over Manchester City in the Premier League, topping the Champions League after winning all six of their European games, and making their way through to the EFL Cup semi-finals.
They face Chelsea in the last four of that competition next week and while the effects of fighting on four fronts may be notable, it’s still hard to see why they are third in the betting for the FA Cup behind both Manchester City and Liverpool, particularly considering the Reds’ struggles this term.
Mikel Arteta’s men have won 23 of their 29 games in all competitions, and their only two defeats came from a late Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick at Anfield in August and a 2-1 loss at Villa Park on a rare off day for the Gunners.
They have come through the worst of their injury crisis and now have sufficient strength in depth to compete in four competitions at once.
The return of Gabriel Jesus from long-term injury gives them another string to their bow in attacking areas, and their defensive solidity is second to none. In their 29 outings this season, they have conceded just 16 goals and have kept the same number of clean sheets.
Arsenal’s recent record in this competition may leave a little to be desired; they have not gone beyond the fourth round in the last three seasons.
However, they were knocked out by Manchester City, Liverpool, and Manchester United on those occasions and have a much easier pipe-opener against Portsmouth this time around.
Fighting on multiple fronts is never easy, but if any team can manage to do so, Arsenal look very solid contenders.
Brentford each-way at 40/1
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Brentford look overpriced to reach a major cup final for the first time in their history.
Keith Andrews has done a remarkable job since taking over the Bees, and with their Premier League status all but confirmed following an excellent first half of the season, they could have a real crack at the FA Cup.
Andrews’ side may need some luck with the draw; they are very tough to beat at home but can be vulnerable on their travels, but they look a much better 40-1 shot than the likes of West Ham.
Only Manchester City have managed to beat Brentford at home this season, and they have gotten the better of Liverpool, Newcastle, Aston Vill,a and Manchester United in their own backyard.
In Igor Thiago, they have the top scorer behind Erling Haaland in the top flight, and the experience of Jordan Henderson cannot be overlooked in midfield.
A back four of Aaron Hickey, Nathan Collins, Kristoffer Ajer, and Michael Kayode is rock-solid, and they are one of the best set-piece defenders in the top flight, conceding just twice from such situations.
A third-round tie against soon-to-be League One side Sheffield Wednesday is extremely winnable, and the Bees could kick on from there.
Brentford will be a tough nut for any team to crack at hom,e and they could just outrun their sizable odds in this year’s FA Cup.
