The Milton Keynes-based team have clinched successive one-twos to begin the season but the two Free Practice sessions have hinted at the possibility of an upset in Melbourne.

Australian Grand Prix predictions & betting tips

Charles Leclerc top 2 finish at 13/10

The opening two rounds of the season saw Ferrari emerge as a clear second-favourite behind Adrian Newey’s latest masterpiece and the opening practice sessions in Melbourne have further strengthened that notion.

Charles Leclerc – third place finisher in Saudi Arabia a couple of weeks ago – topped the timing charts in FP2 and simulations have Ferrari as slight favourites over a single lap.

The Prancing Horse do lag behind their bullish counterparts in race simulations but the gap is smaller than the previous two races, where a Ferrari driver was less than five seconds behind second-place Sergio Perez on both occasions.

The rest of Ferrari’s competitors look some way off the pace, with Mercedes enduring a particularly rough time of things on Friday morning.

Carlos Sainz can go toe-to-toe with Leclerc when at his best but the Spaniard did well to even make it through Free Practice following his appendix surgery a couple of weeks ago, leaving Leclerc as clear favourite to upset the pecking order.

Fernando Alonso top 6 finish at 5/4

Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso put in a good showing to leave their Aston Martins fourth and fifth respectively in Free Practice 2 and veteran Fernando Alonso can use all the tricks in the book to secure a solid finish on Sunday.

Alonso finished fifth in Jeddah a couple of weeks ago and showed excellent pace on Friday morning, with qualifying simulations showing them to have the third-best car on the grid.

They are slightly adrift of McLaren in race trim, but if Alonso can put in a solid qualifying performance he has the wiley racecraft to hold off all challengers around the Albert Park Circuit.
