Players Championship winner prediction: Dustin Johnson at 12/1

Bryson DeChambeau is the talk of the golfing world again after his Arnold Palmer Invitational victory, during which he showcased his incredible power to send the galleries wild, and his fans are expecting more success in the Players Championship at Sawgrass this week.

There are reasons for believing the man of the moment will fail, though, and others are preferred in the Sawgrass betting. It must be noted that the Arnold Palmer Invitational did not have a stellar field – none of the world’s top five were in attendance – and it should also be pointed out that two remarkably long putts were the main reason DeChambeau prevailed on Sunday.

His driving was getting all the attention, but he holed a pair of ridiculously long putts – at the fourth hole and the 11th – which proved decisive in his duel with Lee Westwood. Sawgrass is not the sort of course which can be overpowered and Dustin Johnson is arguably a better value option than DeChambeau.

Johnson has endured a month of poor putting, suffering particularly badly on the greens of The Concession in the WGC last time out, but it is surely only a matter of time before he gets going on the dancefloors again and starts lifting trophies.

Johnson’s win-rate over the last five years is incredible – and it has been getting more staggering in recent months. Johnson has won four of his last ten tournaments and five of his last 15. Given he was the only player in the Sawgrass field to card four rounds in the 60s in 2019 – and that last year’s event was abandoned after round one – another DJ victory seems entirely feasible.

Players Championship outsider prediction: Hideki Matsuyama at 33/1

Hideki Matsuyama, seventh in 2016 and eighth in 2019, could emerge as the main danger to Johnson backers.

Matsuyama was leading the field before last year’s cancellation having just equalled the Sawgrass course record. He took seventh place in 2016 and eighth in 2019 and his last three rounds at Sawgrass have him at 20 under par.
