Next up in our summer of season outright tips, we head to Portugal as the Primeira Liga returns on Friday night with champions Sporting CP making the trip to Casa Pia.

A big three have dominated this division for its entire history with Sporting, Benfica and Porto the only teams who have won multiple titles. Boavista pulled off the last upset way back in 2001 and before that the only other team to take the title were Belenenses, who captured a post-war trophy in 1946 and now play their football in the third tier.

Portugal Primeira Liga 2025/26 outright winner prediction

Sporting to win at 5/4

Sporting have lost star striker Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal over the summer but the Lisbon club, seeking a third successive title, could still be the team to beat.

Replacing Gyokeres’ goals looks a big ask but they have a few players who can share the scoring burden around.

Trincao hit nine goals and provided 14 assists in the league last season, while Danish youngster Conrad Harder had five goals and five assists in 28 games despite largely featuring as a substitute. Harder, 20, could be set for a bigger role in the coming campaign and the fit-again of Pedro Goncalves should provide a huge boost as he missed a huge chunk of last season due to injury,

Sporting have used some of the fee they received for Gyokeres to bring in Colombian striker Luis Suarez from Almeria and he could prove to be a shrewd buy. Suarez had 27 goals in 41 games in Spain’s second tier last season, and prior to that he managed six goals in 15 games in La Liga for a team who ended up being relegated.

Porto were way off the pace last season as they finished 11 points behind Sporting in third. They have recruited well over the summer, but they still look a level below the two Lisbon clubs.

Benfica should be Sporting’s biggest threat and they do have a very talented squad. Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis will be worth a look in the top scorer market but like their city rivals they’re also going into the new season after some high-profile exits, with veteran Angel Di Maria departing as a free agent and full-back Alvaro Carreras completing a move to Real Madrid.

Benfica beat Sporting in the Super Cup last week and they should push their Dérbi de Lisboa rivals all the way but they could fall short. Sporting only lost two games last season and they are yet to lose a league game under Rui Borges, who took charge of the club in December. Gyokeres was a huge presence but Sporting were by no means a one-man team and they can continue their domestic dominance in 2025/26.
