Premier League 2025/26 knee-jerk predictions

The dust is settling on the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season, but already our eyes are on the next campaign as we make some knee-jerk predictions for the 2025/26 season.
Man City to bite back
Discounting the Community Shield, 2024/25 was Pep Guardiola’s second-ever trophyless season as a manager, but he has never gone two seasons without a league title, and I expect him and Manchester City to come out swinging next term.
The departure of Kevin De Bruyne leaves a huge hole for Guardiola to fill, but recruitment has rarely been an issue for the Citizens, and favourites Liverpool have their own void to fill with Trent Alexander-Arnold joining Real Madrid.
They ended the season with seven wins and three draws from their final ten matches, and Rodri’s return from injury will be a huge boost to their chances.
Villans to make the top four
A lot of people expected Aston Villa to struggle juggling the demands of Premier League football with the Champions League this season, but only a controversial defeat to Manchester United on the final day of the campaign kept them out of the top five, and they impressed in the Champions League, too.
It remains to be seen whether Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford make their loan moves permanent, but Unai Emery has a strong squad at his disposal, with many of his starters either in their prime or young and improving.
Newcastle struggled the last time they qualified for the Champions League, and Chelsea’s youthful group remains too inconsistent to be confident in.
Leeds can buck the trend and survive in the top flight
For the second season in a row, all three promoted teams were sent tumbling back into the Championship as Southampton, Leicester, and Ipswich all failed to gain a foothold in the top flight.
I think one team might buck the trend in 2025/26, though, and that team is Leeds United, although I do expect Sunderland and Burnley to face a swift return to the second tier.
Burnley’s defence-first approach is likely to come unstuck against the superior attacking quality in the Premier League, and Sunderland, quite frankly, just don’t look good enough.
Leeds, however, balanced attack and defence well throughout the campaign, have a huge fanbase to cheer them on, and have a solid amount of Premier League quality in their squad.
