Season review
Arsenal should view a trophyless 2024/25 campaign as a missed opportunity, after taking their first backwards step in Mikel Arteta’s reign.
The Gunners had improved their points tally year-on-year since the Spaniard’s first full season in charge. After matching the Invincibles’ points tally in 23/24, they were expected to kick on and wrestle the title away from Manchester City.
Ultimately, they ended up only three points ahead of a City side that fell apart midway through the campaign.
The Gunners did deal with injuries to key players, while they dropped 11 points across a six-game spell in April and May as they turned their full focus to the Champions League.
Arsenal once again had the best defensive record in the division, but their huge scoring drop-off can’t entirely be due to their injury issues. The Gunners dipped from 91 goals in the previous campaign to 69, while their Expected Goals tally of 59.9 ranked seventh across the league.
Scoring issues, alongside a league-high six red cards, were key issues behind their early struggles, which saw them lose ground on Liverpool.
On the bright side, their four league defeats were the lowest of any Arsenal side since 2008. Arteta has continued to make them difficult to beat, he now needs to find a way to turn more draws into victories.
Key stat: Arsenal were the only top-half side that didn’t have a player score 10+ league goals
Transfer window preview
Co-chairman Josh Kroenke promised investment this summer ahead of Arsenal’s final home game. However, that was tempered slightly by Arteta’s claim that there’s little room for improvement after three consecutive second-place finishes.
The Gunners need a goalscorer, but squad depth is becoming a pressing issue. The looming departures of Jorginho, Kieran Tierney, Raheem Sterling, and Neto will reduce their 22-man squad to just 18 players.
Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is expected to be one of the Gunners’ first signings this summer. He should allow Declan Rice to continue his growth as a scoring threat from midfield for Arsenal. However, if the bulk of their budget is spent on a defensively minded midfielder, the Gunners could struggle to take the next step.
