Team overview
- League Position: 10th
- FA Cup: Third round
- EFL Cup: Quarter-finals
- Top scorer: Bryan Mbeumo & Yoane Wissa (20)
Season review
Brentford enjoyed a solid if unspectacular season as they occasionally flirted with battling for Europe and never looked in any danger of being dragged into the drop zone.
The Bees were never any lower than 13th at any point in the season but were never any higher than eighth after the third round of fixtures either.
The key to their success was the form of attacking duo Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, who both finished up with 20 goals for the season. Mbuemo scored all his goals in the Premier League, while Wissa hit 19 in the league and one in the EFL Cup.
Brentford were unable to make much of an impact in cup competitions as they were on the wrong end of an upset in their first FA Cup game of the season, suffering a 1-0 defeat at home to Plymouth Argyle. They did reach the last eight of the EFL Cup but lost out to eventual champions Newcastle United.
The campaign had a tale of two halves quality for Thomas Frank’s men as they remained unbeaten at home until December 21, but picked up just one point on the road during that period. From that point on, Brentford won just two of their final 11 home games but became one of the Premier League’s road warriors – picking up seven away wins in their final 11 trips.
Key stat: Brentford’s run to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup was just their fourth appearance in the last eight of a major tournament since 1949. Their best cup run is a semi-final appearance in the EFL Cup in 2021
Transfer window preview
There has already been a switch between the sticks for Brentford, with Caoimhin Kelleher arriving from Liverpool to replace Mark Flekken, who has been sold to Bayer Leverkusen for a reported £8 million.
Record buy Igor Thiago should feel like a new signing for Brentford next season after an injury-ravaged first season in west London.
The Brazilian joined the Bees in a reported £ 30 million deal last summer but didn’t feature until November due to a knee injury. Thiago managed four appearances before another setback, before making four further appearances as a substitute in the final stages of the season.
Brentford have already moved to sign Michael Kayode on a permanent deal after he spent the second half of last season on loan at the club from Fiorentina.
Boss Thomas Frank has already admitted that Mbeumo and Wissa could be sold, and whether or not either or both of those players move on will dictate how active the Bees are themselves in the summer transfer market.
Mbuemo appears to be moving towards a switch to Manchester United, while Wissa has been linked with Nottingham Forest.
For his part, Frank is relaxed about the situation and confirmed he would “like to keep them” but accepts that Brentford are a “selling club”.
