Premier League Team Guides: Burnley

Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.

This article is part of our team-by-team guide to the 2025/26 Premier League season.

Team overview

  • League Position: 2nd (Championship, promoted)
  • FA Cup: Fifth round
  • EFL Cup: Second round
  • Top scorer: Josh Brownhill (18)

Season review

Burnley successfully bounced back at the first attempt as they finished second in the Championship, level on 100 points with champions Leeds United and 10 clear of Sheffield United in third.

The Clarets spent five consecutive seasons in the top flight between 2016 and 2021 but have been a ‘yo-yo club’ since. Burnley were promoted in 2023 but relegated the following season, and their clear goal for the next campaign will be avoiding another immediate return to the Championship.

Scott Parker took charge of Burnley last summer following Vincent Kompany’s move to Bayern Munich and enjoyed an exceptional first season as manager.

The Clarets boasted the best defensive record in the Championship with just 16 goals conceded, and they navigated the entire league season without losing a home game – becoming the first team in the Championship to do so since the 2009/10 season.

The Lancashire outfit matched a record set by Port Vale in the 1953/54 season by keeping 30 clean sheets, 12 of which came in consecutive home games between December 21 2024 and March 4 2025, which was a new outright Football League record. Furthermore, Burnley became the first side in English league history not to concede more than one goal in any fixture throughout an entire season.

The records tumbled for Burnley thanks to their formidable backline, but it wasn’t enough to deny Leeds the Championship title as they became the first team in English football history not to win a title after amassing 100 points.

Key stat: Burnley conceded just 0.35 goals per game in the Championship, the best ever defensive record in English league history.

Transfer window preview

Parker’s key goal will be keeping his squad intact but that may be easier said than done. Key man and top scorer Josh Brownhill is a free agent and it is looking increasingly likely that he will depart, with West Ham, Everton and Wolves among his reported suitors.

CJ Egan-Riley is also heading for pastures new as a free agent and the former Manchester City youngster is believed to have agreed to join French side Strasbourg.

Burnley have managed to bring in a few new faces themselves as they prepare for life back in the Premier League. The Turf Moor club have forked out around £33million to sign Marcus Edwards from Sporting, Jaidon Anthony from Bournemouth, Bashir Humphreys from Chelsea and Zian Flemming from Millwall.

The Clarets clear priority for the season ahead will be avoiding the drop and their strong defensive foundations should give them a platform to build on. Anthony, Edwards and Flemming provide further options in attack, but replacing Brownhill’s goals could be an issue.
