Season review
The 2024-25 campaign marked one of the most successful seasons in Newcastle’s history as they ended a 70-year wait for a major trophy by winning the League Cup while also finishing fifth in the Premier League to secure a return to the Champions League.
The Magpies started the season in mediocre fashion by a nine-game winning streak across all competitions over a busy winter period propelled them up the table and included their League Cup semi-final first-leg victory over Arsenal.
Led by Alexander Isak and with Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy all enjoying excellent seasons, Newcastle’s attack soon became one of the most feared in the country.
Eddie Howe’s side scored at least three goals in 15 separate games throughout the season, with a 5-0 rout of FA Cup winners Crystal Palace their standout result of the campaign.
While their league finish of fifth deserves applause, it was their League Cup triumph which stole the headlines and sent the North East into raptures.
Newcastle did it the hard way, too, beating Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool en route to glory and their ability to beat the best teams when it matters most is why some are touting them as potential dark horses for the title next term.
Key stat: Newcastle won seven and lost just five of their 14 matches against their fellow top-six sides in the 2024-25 season.
Transfer window preview
Rumours about Newcastle’s 27-goal star man, Isak, moving to Arsenal circulated at various points of last season but the Gunners’ interest seems to have moved to the Swede’s compatriot Viktor Gyokeres and Slovenian forward Benjamin Sesko instead.
That means the Magpies can now think about building around Isak rather than replacing him and Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho, Harvey Eliott and Noni Madueke are some of the names being lined up to bolster Howe’s attack.
There is also work to be done at the back, though, with Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford the likeliest candidate to take over from Nick Pope between the sticks and the likes of Marc Guehi and Loic Bade standing out as centre-back targets.
Outright odds: 14-1
Top 4 odds: 8-5
