Season review

To label last season as a mixed campaign for Tottenham would be a huge understatement.

Spurs ended a 17-year trophy drought by securing the Europa League but also endured their worst domestic season in nearly 50 years.

Despite living up to his promise of winning a trophy in his second season, Ange Postecoglou was sacked as manager a couple of weeks after the season ended and Thomas Frank is now in charge after leaving Brentford.

Spurs made a reasonable start to the 2024/25 campaign but a disastrous run of eight defeats in 10 games through December and January ended any realistic ambitions of success in the Premier League.

The injuries began to mount, and it became clear in the second half of the season that the Europa League was a clear priority.

Spurs overcame AZ Alkmaar, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League to set up a final showdown with Manchester United. In the Premier League, they won just one of their final 12 games as they finished in 17th spot with 38 points, their lowest points total of the Premier League era.

The Europa League final became crucial for both United and Spurs. The winner would get a trophy and a place in next season’s Champions League, while the loser would be left empty handed.

Spurs edged out United in the final in Bilbao with a 1-0 victory, courtesy of a Brennan Johnson goal in the 42nd minute to secure the club’s first European title in 41 years.

Key stat: By finishing the season in 17th place with just 38 points, Tottenham recorded their lowest top-flight finish since the 1976–77 season.

Transfer window preview

Tottenham can afford to be bold in the transfer market after securing a place in next season’s Champions League and new boss Frank should have a number of new arrivals to work with.

Frank may be reunited with Bryan Mbuemo as he seems set to leave Brentford, although Manchester United are also chasing the striker.

Mathys Tel is set to make a permanent switch to Spurs after his loan stint from Bayern Munich, while defender Kevin Danso has arrived from Lens.

There are likely to be some high-profile exits as well as Cristian Romero is being touted as an Atletico Madrid target. Club legend Son Heung-min is also being linked with a move away as he enters the final year of his deal.
