Season review
Wolves picked up where they left off at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, having closed the previous season on an awful run. From January 1st through to his sacking in December, Gary O’Neil oversaw seven wins and 21 defeats from 34 games.
Wolves were below Leicester and Ipswich in the table while O’Neil was dismissed. The relegation battle ultimately petered out, but Wolves were in a dire spot until Vitor Pereira arrived just before Christmas.
The Portuguese picked up seven points from his first three games, almost doubling their tally. A difficult run in January pushed them back into danger, but Wolves closed out the campaign with eight wins from their last 15 – the seventh-best record in the league over that stretch.
Their late burst moved them 17 clear of the drop, but their early struggles meant they couldn’t climb out of the bottom five. Pereira did significantly lift the mood around Molineux, forging a close bond with the supporters.
Wolves finished with the fourth-most goals conceded, while they outperformed their Expected Goals tally by the second-highest rate across the league. That overperformance can be explained by the quality they possessed in the final third, but it’s a looming problem for the coming campaign.
Key stat: Only six Premier League sides won more games than Wolves (10) since Vitor Pereira’s appointment in December
Transfer window preview
Wolves have already raised close to £100million in this transfer window, with Matheus Cunha heading to Manchester United and Rayan Ait-Nouri off to City.
Wolves are no strangers to big sales, having moved Max Kilman and Pedro Neto for big money last summer.
They are bidding to continue their transfer model by landing highly-rated Celta Vigo midfielder Fer Lopez, with the Spaniard said to be on the verge of a move to Molineux.
They will likely need another addition in the final third, while the club is without a recognised left-back following Ait-Nouri’s departure.
Outright odds: 1000/1
Top 4 or to be relegated odds: 10/3
