AC Milan vs Atalanta Predictions

  • AC Milan are unbeaten in their last 14 league games, winning nine.
  • Atalanta have failed to win any of their last eight Serie A matches against sides currently in the top half, drawing three and losing five.
  • Milan, on the other hand, have won six and drawn two of their last eight such games.
  • Milan won the reverse fixture 3-2 in October, when Atalanta were still considered title outsiders.

Rossoneri ready for one last title push

After more than a decade since their last league title, AC Milan could be crowned champions of Italy this weekend, should they beat Atalanta and Inter lose at Cagliari later on Sunday. The Rossoneri have, thus far, navigated a tough run-in in excellent fashion, although the visit of an Atalanta side unbeaten in four games will provide another challenge for Stefano Pioli’s men.

Atalanta have won two and drawn two of their last four contests after a five-match winless run, although it should be noted those two victories came against two of the league’s most out-of-form sides in Venezia and Spezia. Gian Piero Gasperini’s men could still finish in the top six, but a failure to win big games has cost them a run at the top four this term: Atalanta have failed to win any of their last eight meetings with teams in the top half of Serie A, losing five.

Milan, meanwhile, have a brilliant record in tough games after overcoming three top-half sides in a row coming into this clash. Pioli’s men have six wins and two draws from their last eight league games against top-half teams, and are unbeaten in 14 Serie A outings. Although Milan’s tight defence was breached by Verona last week – just their second concession in 10 league games, they created 2.9 expected goals (xG) in a 3-1 win as they rediscovered their attacking verve.

Back Milan to edge one step closer

Given the two teams’ contrasting records in big games, as well as the fact Atalanta average well over a concession per game in Serie A (45 goals conceded in 36 games), backing the hosts to come through another tough test looks a good play.

While we’re backing a Milan win, a 2-1 victory could be a decent correct score prediction, with eight of Atalanta’s last nine outings featuring goals at both ends.
