AC Milan to Win

Reason for tip

Milan should edge this tie by virtue of being the more consistent side in Serie A this term, losing fewer games than their city rivals. They pipped Inter to the title last term and their young squad should be hardened by that ahead of the huge pressure they face in this tie. Inter drew 3-3 with Benfica in their last European game and had an easier path to the last four, while Milan have proven themselves in some tough ties and can take a first leg lead.

AC Milan 1-0

Reason for tip

Milan’s only goal conceded across their last six games in Europe came in the 90th minute when they were 2-0 up against Napoli. They’ve kept four clean sheets in five home games in this competition and have won to nil in three of their last four at home.

Rafael Leao To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Leao hasn’t hit the heights he is capable of in Europe this term but he’s shown his skills in front of goal domestically, hitting 12 Serie A goals this term. Two of those came in a win over Inter earlier this term and he can find the net on Wednesday.

Milan rivals back at the top

The Milan derby returns to the biggest stage on Wednesday night when these two sides meet in the Champions League semi-finals. The pair last met in Europe in 2005 in that infamous flare-drenched night at San Siro, where crowd trouble handed AC Milan a 3-0 win on their way to the final in Istanbul.

These two last met in the semi-finals 20 years ago, when the pair drew 1-1 on aggregate across the two legs. AC Milan won on away goals and went on to lift the trophy that season. This tie is expected to be similarly close, with just two points between the two sides in Serie A. With no away goals to settle the tie, we could be set for 210 minutes of one of Europe’s most intense derbies, with heartbreak in store for one of these sides.

Who will handle the tension?

Milan derbies are always huge occasions, but with a golden opportunity to make the Champions League final on the line expect a fierce encounter. Given Serie A’s status in Europe and the struggles these two sides have been through, making it back to this point is a surprise for both sides. Given that they’re currently fourth and fifth in a brutal top four chase domestically, there’s a chance at least one of these two won’t make next season’s competition.

There may be a huge prize on offer for the winner, but the blow it would be to the losing side can’t be overstated. That’s likely to bring out a cagey affair, especially as both sides have made it this far on the back of some good defending.

The deciding factor is likely to be which side can deal with the pressure. While this is a young Milan side, they handled the tension of last year’s Serie A title race, beating Inter to the title by two points. They’ve been more consistent domestically this term despite being two points shy of Inter. The Nerazzurri have lost 11 of their 34 league games, drawing only three. The Rossoneri have been able to avoid defeat in 27 league games, so they look better placed to deal with the pressure.

Leao to edge it for Rossoneri

Milan have only conceded one goal in their last six matches in the Champions League, holding firm through the knockout stages until the 93rd minute against Napoli last time out. The Rossoneri have lost only twice in their last 17 matches, going nine games without defeat. They’ve also won six of their last nine at San Siro to nil, so there’s plenty of reason to get behind them in this one.

Inter have made the last four thanks to a straightforward win over Porto and then a 5-3 victory against a Benfica side who haven’t been the same since losing Enzo Fernandez. Meanwhile, the Rossoneri have made it through two tense ties with Tottenham and Serie A champions Napoli. While the designated home side haven’t scored in their last two meetings with Inter, they haven’t gone three games without a goal against them since 1980. Given their defensive record, a single goal would likely be enough for Milan.

Rafael Leao is the man to look towards as a potential difference-maker. He’s not made a huge scoring impact in Europe this term, but he has hit 12 league goals this term, including two in a 3-2 victory over Inter earlier this term. He’s been their standout dribbler in Europe this term and that skillset could be vital in such a tense game, so look to him to score in the first leg.
