Alaves vs Alcorcon Predictions
Both these sides were in the Second Tier last term and Alcorcon, who have never played in the top flight still are, so it’s a massive opportunity for one of them to make a rare appearance in a Copa del Rey Semi-Final. Alaves are very much in the box-seat after their 2-0 win in Madrid last week. Almost all the action came in 2nd Half Stoppage Time when substitute Ibai Gómez scored twice for the visitors, while Alcorcon defender Bellvís received a red card.
With even a 1 goal defeat enough to send Alaves through, it’d be a huge shock if Alcorcon can turn this tie around but there are plenty of reasons why they could get a result on the night. Firstly Alaves are a side that seems more comfortable playing away from home and have regularly been frustrated in front of their own fans this term. They’ve only won 2 of their 9 home games in La Liga and average just 1 goal per game on home soil.
Struggling Leganes picked up a result at the Estadio de Mendizorroza at the weekend and even in the Segunda Division last season, Alaves weren’t that convincing at home. Even though they finished the season as Champions, 10 visiting sides got a result in Vitoria, including Alcorcon.
Further evidence to suggest this tie might not be all over comes in the shape of Alcorcon’s incredible record in this competition. Lower league sides very rarely progress even to the last 16 but Alcorcon have often had good runs into the latter stages of the competition, famously knocking out Real Madrid a few years back. This is the 3rd Round in a row where they’ve been drawn to play the 1st Leg at home and have failed to win it. However, they still progressed against top flight Espanyol, winning a penalty shoot-out in Barcelona and were also victorious at Cordoba in the last round, having only drawn the 1st Leg.
The deficit they need to make up here may be bigger but this could still be an awkward night for Alaves who could be lulled into a false sense of security by their 1st Leg Win. The hosts could also be tempted to again rest a few players, given their advantage with survival in La Liga the priority still and backing Double Chance – Alcorcon or Draw at 10/11 looks like it could be a decent bet.
