Ailing Alaves can pick up positive result

Alaves find themselves at real risk of relegation in La Liga, with a five-game winless run seeing them start the weekend one point adrift of safety, but they may be able to stifle visitors Real Betis.

Alaves are in dire form but three of their last five outings have come against top-four trio Real Madrid, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, and in their two defeats to the capital clubs they were beaten by a single goal.

That shows that all hope is not yet lost for Eduardo Coudet’s side and they have been tough to beat at home, where they have suffered defeat only twice in nine attempts.

Alaves battled to a 2-0 success against Rayo Vallecano in their last home game, while they’ve also edged to slender 1-0 victories over Sevilla and Real Sociedad since the start of December.

Busy Betis could be undercooked

Betis started the weekend sixth in La Liga but Thursday’s 2-0 defeat at PAOK in the Europa League means that they have won only one of their last five away games.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men were frustrated in a 1-1 draw at rock-bottom Oviedo in their last away league trip, which came hot on the heels of a 5-1 defeat at a rampant Real, and Alaves will be the fresher of the pair.

A low-scoring contest looks likely. The last seven meetings with Alaves at home have featured two or fewer goals while five of the hosts’ last eight matches have gone under 2.5.

Alaves are unbeaten in three meetings at home to Real Betis, with two of those ending in draws, so a 1-1 correct-score line must make plenty of appeal.
