Although the Brazilian Serie A season remains in its infancy with just 12 games played, Sunday’s contest between Atletico Goianiense and Juventude could prove crucial, with just two places and three points separating the two strugglers, currently 17^th and 19^th in the division respectively. Both have struggled to keep goals out to date, meaning entertainment should be expected.

Indeed, Atletico Goianiense fell to a 4-2 defeat to table-topping Palmeiras earlier this week, but their defensive issues predate that reverse. Their 17 goals conceded this season gives them the joint-third worst defence in Serie A, and both teams have scored in four of their last six games. Atletico have only failed to score in one of their last eight outings, however, so should trouble another struggling rearguard.

No team in Serie A has conceded as many as the 21 goals shipped by Juventude this term, with Eduardo Baptista’s men sitting second-bottom of the league after embarking on a three-match losing run. They have conceded nine goals in their five away games this year, winning just one, but have also shown signs of life at the other end, with both teams scoring in eight of their 12 league games.

Goals at both ends likely as leaky rearguards face off

Given neither side look to be good value on the result markets after making poor starts to the campaign, backing both teams to score – or more accurately in this case, both teams to concede – looks a strong play.

Meanwhile, with Juventude losing each of their last three games and the hosts taking a respectable eight points from their six home games thus far, a 2-1 Atletico win looks a decent correct score prediction.
