Atletico Madrid vs AC Milan Predictions
- Atletico Madrid won the reverse fixture 2-1.
- AC Milan are winless after four Champions League games (D1, L3).
- Los Colchoneros have lost just once at home this season.
- Milan have scored in 16 of their 17 games.
Qualification in doubt for two heavyweights
Atletico Madrid and AC Milan meet in a crucial Champions League Group B encounter on Wednesday in what is essentially a must win game for both sides.
Liverpool have already wrapped up top spot with two games to spare, with Atleti one point behind Porto in second and Milan bottom of the standings with just one point on the board.
The Rossoneri need to win both of their remaining games to stand any chance of progress, while if the hosts fail to win they could be eliminated before they head to Porto in the final round of games depending on how the Portuguese outfit fare against Liverpool.
Experience key for Atletico
Atletico Madrid are seasoned campaigners in Europe’s elite club competition and are regulars in the latter stages, having reached the knockout rounds seven times in the last eight years. For Milan, this season marks the first time they have been involved in the Champions League since 2013/14 and Los Colchoneros’ greater experience, coupled with home advantage, can see them claim the win.
Atleti also won the reverse fixture 2-1 in Milan and were thoroughly dominant in that game. The Italian side have been strong travellers domestically this term but have fallen short on their European excursions, losing at both Liverpool and Porto.
Diego Simeone’s men have a formidable home record and only Liverpool have managed to get the better of the Madrid outfit at their Wanda Metropolitano Stadium home this season, and Atleti look well placed to claim the win they need to keep their knockout stage hopes on track ahead of this match-up.
Milan can make a game of it
The Spanish champions are incredibly strong defensively at home with six clean sheets in nine games this term across all competitions but there are signs the visitors can at least get on the scoresheet.
Milan have to go all out in this game as only a win will do and they have only failed to score in one of their 17 games across all competitions this season. The Italian giants scored in the reverse fixture, while Atleti have conceded five goals in total in their last four home games despite managing two clean sheets during that run. With that in mind, a 3-1 win for the hosts has some appeal here as the game could be fairly tight for large periods but there is a chance for late goals too as both teams go hunting for the result they need.
