Atletico set to secure some silverware

Having last won the Copa del Rey in 2013, Atletico Madrid will be keen to end the lengthy wait and their reward for knocking out Barcelona in the semi-final is a trophy decider against Real Sociedad.

Atletico Madrid defeated Barcelona 4-0 at home before enduring a nervy conclusion as they trailed 3-0 at the Camp Nou with 20 minutes still on the clock.

However, Diego Simeone’s side clung on and they should be full of belief having also overcome the Catalan giants over two legs to set up a Champions League semi-final date with Arsenal.

Atletico have lost five of their last six matches in 90 minutes but they have played Barcelona twice and fierce rivals Real Madrid in that run and should be much happier against Real Sociedad on neutral soil at the Estadio de La Cartuja.

Sociedad may have met their match

Sociedad overcame Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao in their Copa del Rey semi-final, winning 1-0 home and away, and they did win this trophy in 2020.

But Sociedad were beaten 3-2 away at Atletico in La Liga at the beginning of March and that means that they are winless in nine meetings with Rojiblancos, a run stretching back to January 2022.

Sitting seventh in La Liga, Sociedad are 15 points behind fourth-placed Atletico in the Spanish top-flight and they may struggle to live with them with silverware on the line.

Atletico’s recent matches have been littered with goals and both teams have scored in seven of their last nine outings. The net has also bulged at both ends in three of the last four rivalries, so a 2-1 win for Simeone’s side may be the way to go.
