Australia Women vs Italy Women Predictions

Ranked 6th in the world, the Australian women come into this World Cup with greater expectations on their shoulders than their male counterparts have ever experienced. Ante Milicic’s side, who’ve secured several pleasing results against top sides in the last 12 months or so, will be looking to lay down a marker when they face Italy in Valenciennes on Sunday.

Australia’s warm-up games didn’t exactly go to plan, they lost 5-3 against USA back in April, while they were beaten 3-0 by Netherlands less than a week ago. However, it must be said that they were up against two very good sides, sides that are somewhat above the level that Italy have been operating at for a while.

If we go back a bit further into 2018, Australia showed the world that they can tussle with the best, as they held both England and USA to draws, while they beat Japan and Brazil. Such form bodes well ahead of this game against Italy, who’ve tended to come up short against the best teams in the world. When they last faced a top side, they were beaten 5-2 by Germany back in November 2018.

Italy are certainly not minnows and they can get competitive against decent sides, as their recent win over Switzerland suggests. However, this will be their first World Cup in 20 years, while it’s one thing overpowering the Swiss, who’re ranked 18th in the world, but getting the better of a top-six side is another thing altogether.

Scoring goals against the top sides is not necessarily something that the Italians struggle with, as they’ve found the net in four of their last five games against teams ranked inside the top six, though they’ve won none of those five and have only avoided defeat once.

If we go back through and look at the efforts of both of the two teams over the last 12 months or so, it’s probably fair to say that neither are great at the back, which means that this game is likely to be about who can offer more going forward. If that is to be case, then the Aussies are the team to be with.

Their recent scoring exploits against the USA suggest that Australia have the quality to outscore an Italian side that is useful without being outstanding.
