Austria -6

Reason for tip

Austria won 4-0 in San Marino in June but could have won by a greater margin. San Marino lost 6-0 at home to Bosnia in September and Austria are perhaps a level above the Bosnians, so they can cover a huge -6 handicap in Vienna.

Austria 8-0

Reason for tip

Austria’s biggest ever win is 9-0 and that may be a target on Thursday but they could fall short. Austria did beat Turkey 6-1 in a friendly last year so they are capable of scoring heavily, take a punt on an 8-0 win for the hosts.

Marcel Sabitzer To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Marcel Sabitzer has a stronger record for his country than he does for club side Borussia Dortmund. Sabitzer has three goals in his last four outings for Austria and can help his side put together a big win over minnows San Marino.

Austria vs San Marino Predictions

  • Austria won 4-0 in San Marino in June.
  • Austria had 13 shots on target in that win.
  • San Marino lost 6-0 at home to Bosnia in September.

Austria could put together huge win

Austria take on San Marino in World Cup qualifying on Thursday in what looks like a huge mismatch.

Ralf Rangnick’s hosts have won all four of their games, scoring nine goals in the process, while San Marino have no points on the board after five games – shipping a hefty 18 goals in the process.

This isn’t a great fixture from a betting perspective either but a small play on Austria to beat a -6 handicap could be of interest.

Austria won the reverse fixture 4-0 and could have won by a bigger margin, as they had 22 attempts overall with 13 on target. San Marino have lost 6-0 at home to Bosnia during this qualification cycle, and Austria won 2-1 in Zenica in the last batch of qualifiers so they may be able to pick up a bigger win over these minnows than the Bosnians managed.

When you’re backing a team to win by at least seven goals, the full time score could be huge but I’m opting for Austria to just fall short of their record win (a 9-0 success over Malta in 1977) with an 8-0 romp. Das Team hit four goals against San Marino away but are capable of bigger scores as they overcame Turkey 6-1 in a friendly last year so they could pull out a massive win on Thursday.’

There isn’t a great deal of value to be found in terms of Austria’s potential scorers by Marcel Sabitzer does look a solid pick at around 4/6. Sabitzer doesn’t score many goals for club side Borussia Dortmund but is more effective going forward for his country, as he scored in both games during the previous international break and has three goals in his last four games for Austria.
