Austria vs Slovakia Predictions

  • Austria have not scored in their last two matches.
  • Less than three goals have been scored (in 90 minutes) in each of the last five Slovakia games.
  • Four of the last six Slovakia away defeats (since Sept 2018) have been by 1-0.

Slovakia won’t let Austria waltz to easy win

Two teams finalising their preparations for Euro 2020 meet in Vienna on Sunday evening with Austria looking for a pre-tournament pick-me-up.

Franco Foda felt his side deserved a draw against England earlier this week, but an inability to finish off the few chances they created means they come into this without a goal in their last two.

And reports of unrest in the camp persist with midfielder Julian Baumgartlinger admitting that the mood in the aftermath of March’s 4-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Denmark was not good.

Marko Arnautovic has not played for Das Team since November, but is hoping to be fit enough to appear off the bench for the visit of Slovakia.

Stefan Tarkovic’s side overcame the Republic of Ireland and Nothern Ireland in playoffs to book their finals slot, but have done little to suggest they will be anything other than fodder in Group E.

Tarkovic selected only three forwards in his 26-man squad this week, reflecting the meagre options available and signalling the approach he will take to avoid serious embarrassment on the big stage.

National talisman Marek Hamsik is feeling his way back to fitness after calf problems and probably won’t start while one of their three attackers – Ivan Schranz – has also been limited in training.

Austria should win but it won’t be pretty – and those rumours of trouble brewing mean we’ll swerve the home side in the outright betting for now.

Our preference is to oppose Austria in scoring more than two team goals here as we fully expect Slovakia to dig in and make it difficult.

A 1-0 home victory looks within grasp of Foda’s men against an opponent that has suffered that result regularly away from home in the past couple of years.
