Blues’ new-found backbone can deny Derry again
Derry City, still looking for their first home win of the season, will attempt to make it tenth time lucky against second-bottom Waterford FC on Friday.
The Candystripes don’t appear to be learning their lessons and have required late equalisers to salvage 1-1 draws against Bohemians and Sligo Rovers in their last two at Brandywell Stadium.
In fact, Derry City have trailed at some stage in every single one of their nine previous home games – which must have manager Ruaidhri Higgins tearing his hair out.
Waterford FC now look like relegation – or a play-off to avoid it – may not be their certain fate this season after new boss Marc Bircham instilled some backbone and confidence.
Their collective chins were on the floor after the 7-0 mauling by Drogheda United in May, which was in the midst of a seven-game losing sequence.
But they travel to Brandywell on the back of consecutive away wins and a creditable 1-1 draw with in-form St Pats – making them an attractive-looking longshot to pick up all three points.
There was only one goal between these when they last met in May and, prior to the recent improvement, Waterford FC’s best early-season result was their 2-1 win at Brandywell.
All these are factored into our selection of Waterford FC on the Asian Handicap with a decent return available for taking the visitors at +0.5.
Goals have been plentiful in the Blues’ recent games, 14 in the last four, so we prefer 2-2 in the correct score market to 1-1 this time.
