Azerbaijan vs Iceland Predictions
- Iceland won the reverse fixture 5-0.
- Azerbaijan have just one point to show from four games.
- The visitors still have a realistic chance of qualifying for World Cup 2026.
Iceland unlikely to blow Baku chance
Iceland have endured a mixed World Cup 2026 qualification bid but victories in their final two games would probably be enough to secure second place in Group D and they can make a perfect start by beating Azerbaijan in Baku.
Iceland sit three points behind Ukraine in the standings and they face the Ukrainians in the last batch of games in Poland on Sunday. Ukraine also have a tough trip to France on Thursday, so a win for Iceland in Azerbaijan would potentially put them in the driving seat going into that last round of games.
Arnar Gunnlaugsson’s side won the reverse fixture 5-0 and come into the game after an impressive 2-2 draw with France, while Azerbaijan have just one point to show from their four group stage games and are on a 14-game winless run – losing 11 of those games.
Iceland are unlikely to repeat their 5-0 success in the first meeting and Azerbaijan are generally good for a goal at home, having scored in eight of their last 11 home fixtures, so a 3-1 win for the visitors has a chance in the correct score market.
Albert Gudmundsson has three goals in as many games during this qualification cycle and he comes into the clash after a strong run domestically, scoring three times in his last five games for Italian side Fiorentina. The 28-year-old looks a strong candidate for an anytime effort in Baku.
