Ligue 1 newcomers can take something from Bordeaux battle

Bordeaux host Ligue 1 newcomers Clermont at the Matmut Atlantique on Sunday in their first competitive match under new coach Vladimir Perkobvic.

The ex-Switzerland boss gained kudos in France when his team knocked the Euro 2020 favourites out at the last-16 stage, but will have his work cut out with Bordeaux.

Les Girondins finished a dismal 12th in the standings last May after a campaign that saw the club go bankrupt and placed into administration.

But there is an air of optimism for the future after a summer takeover with the new recruitment team placing bids on a number of interesting players – including Clermont’s 22-goal top scorer from last season Mohamed Bayo.

Clermont have so far refused to bite and Bayo returned to training this week after a knee problem so he should be OK for Les Lanciers’ long-awaited Ligue 1 bow.

The visitors could cause Bordeaux some problems on Sunday, particularly on the evidence of their recent 1-1 friendly draw against Troyes in which they were very fortunate to escape without defeat.

Both teams scoring has been a consistent feature of both sides’ warm-up games and we see no reason that this game would buck that trend.

Goals were a regular feature of Les Girondins home games last term, but there is a new coach in charge, so we will stick with a 1-1 score prediction rather than reach for a goal-fest that may not be on the cards.
