Tip Reasoning

  • Dortmund have only kept 1 league clean sheet this campaign, and both teams have scored in 9 of their 11 Bundesliga games.
  • Stuttgart are without a clean sheet in 7 competitive games, but have scored in 8 of their 11 league fixtures.
  • 11 goals were scored in the sides’ two Bundesliga meetings last season.

BVB Fragility Makes Goals Likely

Borussia Dortmund have been the Bundesliga’s entertainers this season; they’ve conceded more goals than second-bottom Arminia Bielefeld, but only perennial winners Bayern Munich have scored more than Der BVB’s 28.

Although their attacking play has been electrifying, Dortmund’s defensive paucity looks likely to cost them a genuine shot at Bayern’s title; their recent 2-0 win over Koln represented their first league clean sheet of the season, and only their second home clean sheet since March.

Stuttgart, meanwhile, arrive at the Westfalonstadion without a clean sheet of their own in 7 matches. The reds are allowing their opponents more shots than any other Bundesliga team, so a BVB side deprived of the injured Erling Haaland should get plenty of opportunities. However, Stuttgart might also be expected to trouble the scoreboard themselves; they’ve scored in 8 of their 11 league games, and recorded a remarkable 5-1 win on their last trip to Dortmund almost a year ago.

Haaland-less BVB Could Struggle

The injury which has side-lined Haaland until the new year is a major blow for Marco Rose; since Haaland’s last Bundesliga appearance, Dortmund have arguably been fortunate to manage wins over Arminia and Koln, against whom they again displayed their defensive fragility, allowing 16 and 21 shots respectively, before being deservedly beaten at Leipzig last time out. Dortmund have been unconvincing in the Norwegian’s absence, and although they have more than enough talent to create chances against their struggling visitors, who are winless in 6, I’m steering clear of the outright markets and making both teams to score my main tip for this clash.

If pushed, I’d back Dortmund to edge an entertaining affair and maintain their perfect home record with a 2-1 correct score prediction, but a combination of Haaland’s absence and the hosts’ dreadful defensive record means Stuttgart should be competitive.
