Reason For Borussia Monchengladbach vs Schalke Predictions

Borussia Monchengladbach replaced Dieter Hecking with former Red Bull Salzburg boss Marco Rose over the summer. He guided the Austrian champions to back-to-back league titles, as well as leading them to the last four of the Europa League in 2017/18, so things look promising for them after a 5th place last season.

He returns to Germany looking to implement his brand of attacking football and at Gladbach he has the squad to do that. Breel Embolo is one such player that fits the mould – he could feature against his former club – while Marcus Thuram, son of former World champion Lilian, is another. Either could support last season’s top scorer Alassane Plea in an attacking partnership.

There’s been a lot of change at Schalke, too. Former Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner returns to Gelsenkirchen as the man tasked with a huge rebuilding project after last season’s 14th-place finish. He has already guided them to a convincing 5-0 win in the DFB Pokal, with Guido Burgstaller looking like his main man up top.

Burgstaller may be supported in attack by Benito Raman this weekend. Schalke signed him from Fortuna Dusseldorf over the summer and he scored 10 goals for them last season. USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie will also no doubt have a spot in Wagner’s plans after establishing his role last term.

With two managerial forces without Bundesliga experience going head to head, it’s hard to know what to truly expect from this game. One thing that is likely though, is that it will be a tougher day out for Schalke than it will be for hosts Gladbach. Schalke have not won any of their last seven competitive matches against Die Fohlen (D4 L3), and last won at Borussia Park in 2013.

However, the Schalke squad does have a lot of quality to it, and their disastrous twelve months are expected to be behind them under new boss David Wagner. And with Gladbach’s strong home form deteriorating towards the end of last season, we can see this being a much more even affair than it first appears. As such, we like the look of a bet on ‘both teams to score’ here.

Gladbach’s main problem towards the end of last season was their defence and they haven’t strengthened that too much over the summer. They failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last eight at home, and with three of the last six meetings between them ending 1-1, we feel like there’s an opportunity for Schalke to grab a point here. Our prediction: a 1-1 draw.
