Braga can deny Bundesliga leaders on first Euro trip

Braga continue to confound in Portugal and abroad and are unlikely to be found wanting by Bundesliga leaders Union Berlin when they cross swords in the Europa League.

Union went top of the German standings for the first in their history by edging past Cologne at the weekend. An early own goal by Timo Hubers gifted them the lead and they held on to win against ten men after Union’s Jordan Siebatcheu had a 10th-minute penalty saved by Marvin Schwabe.

The Iron Ones are a solid unit, but don’t appear to be creating much as an attacking force. Urs Fischer’s side are among the bottom three for open play xG in the Bundesliga and rank very last for set-play xG. Their results, which already feature a few 1-0s, appear to unsustainable over time unless they can boost their attacking output.

Hosts on fire domestically

Artur Jorge’s on-fire Braga won their opening group game – unlike Union who lost to Belgian outfit Union SG – 2-0 in Malmo and returned to domestic action with a 3-2 win at Rio Ave. They were 3-0 up with ten minutes to go, so fatigue from the Swedish trip may have been a factor in the late slump, but it did not cost them any points.

With greater rest between fixtures, Braga can pinch a 1-0 win against a Union side that has yet to experience the rigmarole of a European away trip. The Archbishops have plenty of Europa League knowledge from their run to the quarter-finals last year and have won each of their last three home games in the competition to nil.

However, backing fewer than three goals in the game would make a good stats based-play here as Union have only conceded once in three Bundesliga away games this term and may be able to snatch another 1-0 if things fall their way. A 1-0 home win is the preferred correct score bet because Braga are yet to come up against a defence this term that can hold them.
