Tip Reasoning

  • Brazil have won seven of their last ten Copa America games – all at home.
  • Brazil have kept clean sheets in seven of their last ten Copa America contests.
  • Brazil have won 16 of the 21 previous Copa America meetings with Chile victorious on only three occasions.

Solid Seleção can keep Chile quiet

Holders Brazil face Chile in the Copa America quarter-finals on Saturday morning with the clear tag of favourites to progress and retain their crown.

Seleção comfortably topped Group B with three wins and a draw – the only points they dropped coming in the last game when Tite rested eight of his regular starters.

That was in part to tackle the only advantage Chile have coming into this game – the extra two days off following their final group game, but Brazil are not short of quality options anyway.

La Roja appear to have actually regressed over the course of the tournament, putting in their best displays against Argentina and Bolivia first up before serving up a shocker in the group finale versus Paraguay.

Their strongest area is in midfield where they possess enough creativity and technical ability to dominate possession, although Tite’s Brazil look well equipped to combat that.

Fred and Casemiro seem to be his favourite combination right now, with Fabinho left to wonder if there are many other international midfields he wouldn’t get into.

Neymar orchestrates it all in the final third and the Paris Saint-Germain star will be keen to further close on Pele’s scoring record for his country.

Somewhat surprisingly, these sides have not met in almost four years but Brazil hold sway in historical terms by 16 wins to three (and two draws).

Although this is unlikely to be as one-sided as the last Copa America meeting, which Brazil won 6-1, we are forecasting a win with a bit to spare for Tite’s men – 2-0.

Six of Brazil’s last ten Copa America wins have covered a -1 goal handicap so that is the selection for Saturday morning’s rendezvous in Rio.
