Reason For Brentford vs Barnsley Predictions

  • Barnsley have scored just 0.8 goals per away game
  • The Tykes have failed to score in 45% of their away matches
  • Brentford have conceded just 16 times in 22 at home
  • The visitors have seen under 2.5 goals in 11 of their last 12 games.

Final-day pressure for both

After 45 rounds of games and almost a year of action, the fate of both Brentford and Barnsley will be decided on the final day. This huge clash impacts both end of the table, with the hosts a point off second and Barnsley two away from survival. Both sides need to claim a victory to end the campaign and hope for slips elsewhere, but just who will come out on top?

The weekend brought very different emotions for this pair, as Brentford lost 1-0 at Stoke to blow their chance to move into the top two ahead of the final day. Meanwhile, Barnsley looked gone until the produced an impressive 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, could that spur them on to secure another campaign in the Championship?

Barnsley’s away troubles

If the Tykes are to beat the drop, then they will need a turnaround in their results on the road. This clash pits together the league’s best home record against the worst away, with Barnsley coming into this clash having taken a point and scored once across their last three trips. Last week saw them visit Leeds, losing 1-0 to a side on their way to automatic promotion. Will that be the case again?

The Tykes have hit only 18 away goals this season, an average of just 0.8 per game. On top of that, they’ve failed to score in 45% of their trips. Barnsley have an awful time converting their chances on their travels, as they’ve hit 13 shots on average per trip, but they convert just 6% of their shots at goal. Our predictions point to them having a tough time stopping a Brentford side who restrict their opponents to less than nine shots per game at home, with the Bees looking as strong at the back as ever.

Brentford to hold firm

Brentford’s eight-game winning streak in the Championship came to an end last time out in that loss to Stoke – the Bees last lost back-to-back games in the competition in August. They look good to hold out here, as they come into this clash with the best attacking record in the league (scoring 79 times) and the second-best defensive record, conceding only one more than Leeds.

The Bees have conceded only 16 times in 22 home games this season, while they’ve won to nil on five occasions across eight games since the restart, with three of those landing in their four games at Griffin Park. The Tykes have already lost without scoring on eight occasions away from home, so a home win to nil is our first prediction here. Meanwhile, we’re backing a 2-0 home win given that 11 of Barnsley’s last 12 league games have seen under 2.5 goals.
