Tip Reasoning

  • Benfica have covered a -1 handicap in seven of their 11 home league victories this season.
  • Famalicao have lost four of their last six away Primeira Liga contests.
  • Famalicao lost by two clear goals at each of Benfica’s big three rivals Porto (3-1) and Sporting (2-0) earlier this season.

Benfica finishing failed season with a flourish

Benfica can continue the feel-good factor about their late-season revival with a convincing win against a Famalicao side hurtling towards the relegation places on Saturday. Clearly, the campaign as a whole has been way off expectations for the Eagles but interim coach Nelson Verissimo has been able to put the smile back on their faces with some recent displays.

Beating rivals Sporting a few days after they salvaged a 3-3 draw at Anfield to bow out of the Champions League with some pride can do a lot for team morale and the hosts are rightfully expected to beat Fama quite handsomely.

The visitors arrive at the Luz on the back of some woeful form that has seen them slip from mid-table comfort to within three points of the relegation play-off place. Rui Pedro Silva’s men couldn’t hold onto a 2-1 lead at Gil Vicente last weekend, although they did record a third point in their last six games.

Famalicao fortunes are trending downwards

Their sole away win since November came against ten-man Maritimo and they look likely to be without several players for this trip to Lisbon. Defender Diogo Figueiras and midfielder Gustavo Assunção are suspended after each collected their fifth yellow cards of the league campaign last weekend. Forward Ivo Rodrigues and midfielder João Carlos Teixeira are doubts for this game with another midfielder Ivo Jaime almost certainly out.

Benfica look worthy of support in the handicap market against opponents in such a worrying spot as Famalicao. The hosts have covered -1 on seven occasions in the league this season, despite more often than not failing to keep a clean sheet.  The clean sheet they got at Sporting last time out boosts our confidence that issues are being sorted out there and we reckon another 2-0 victory is well within the hosts’ compass for Saturday’s game.
