Trip to Brentford a distraction for United

Brentford and Manchester United meet in a Premier League fixture on Sunday but the visitors will have their European quest at the forefront of their minds.

United overcame Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in Spain on Thursday and are now clearly in the driving seat to reach the final, where league rivals Tottenham will probably await after their own 3-1 win over Bodo/Glimt.

Brentford’s season appeared to have fizzled out not too long ago but a four-game unbeaten run (W2, D2) means they could secure a place in Europe next season via the league, as potentially the top 10 or even 11 places could be enough to qualify.

In-form Bees can win comfortably

Regardless of how the European qualification picture could turn out, Brentford are the form team here and United will probably rotate and rest some key men ahead of next week’s visit of Bilbao despite their healthy lead.

The Bees are the clear favourites here so to get a bit of value out of backing the hosts a home win with a -1 handicap looks a decent option for our main bet.

Brentford have won their last two games by two-goal margins, including a win on Thursday of their own at Champions League chasing Nottingham Forest. Thomas Frank’s side have been struggling at home but they ended a lengthy winless run in front of their own fans by seeing off Brighton in their last game at the Gtech Community Stadium, and the visit of a distracted United side who probably won’t offer a great deal of resistance looks an excellent opportunity to pick up another three points.

Wissa a goal contender

A 3-0 win for Brentford is the correct score pick as when the Bees do win at home they usually do it in style. The west Londoners have eight wins in 17 home league games and they’ve scored at least three goals in seven of those victories, while a United goal isn’t anticipated as Brentford have two clean sheets in their last four games and the visitors have drawn blanks in three of their last five in the Premier League.

Yoane Wissa is the form man in the Brentford attack and has scored in three consecutive games. The Gambian has 17 goals for the season in the Premier League and he can continue his purple patch on Sunday.
