Reason For Brest vs Rennes Predictions

Julien Stéphan’s Rennes side have been in incredible form so far this season with their last defeat to Nice before the break halting their run of three wins in a row. They managed to beat PSG in just their second match of the campaign and will be looking to put in a similar type of performance against Brest.

Rennes have scored six goals in their four matches already and despite conceding the fifth biggest value of chances with an xGA of 6.71, they rank tied third for least goals conceded. Rennes’ away form has been very good recently with them losing just two of their last nine matches on the road. They averaged two goals a game in that time and have improved their defending away from home with back-to-back clean sheets this campaign.

Brest started the season in great form with an unbeaten run of three matches making it a rather successful return to life in Ligue 1. Their last match before the international break ended in defeat though as an out of form Nîmes side put three past them. Brest really didn’t show much going forward against Nîmes before the break as they really took a while to get going, only creating their first dangerous chance after 67 minutes.

This result came away from home though, they have been much more confident when at Stade Francis-Le Blé with just the one defeat in their last 20 games there. However, 18 of those were against Ligue 2 opposition and Rennes will be a bigger test here.

This hasn’t been the most consistent fixture in recent years with both teams up until recently being in different divisions but they did compete last season in the cup with Rennes winning on penalties after a 2-2 draw. We think this will be another tight affair with both teams so strong home and away respectively. We’re edging this one in favour of Brest though as they the Stade Francis-Le Blé was a very successful home ground for them throughout their promotion season last year and that has continued into this Ligue 1 campaign with them picking up a win and a draw so far. Rennes have also been shaky in some regard when on the road as while they have kept two clean sheets, they have amassed a poor xGA of 4.18 over that time. Therefore we’re going to back the Draw No Bet market in favour of the hosts as we can see Brest nicking this one with their home form. We’re predicting this one to end 2-1 to Brest.
