Beesley brought in to bang in the goals

There should be a few goals at Pirelli Stadium on Saturday where Burton Albion and Mansfield Town, two clubs that struggled last season, kick off their campaigns in League One. The Brewers only just survived the drop to League Two by the skin of their teeth, finishing one point ahead of Crawley.

Gary Bowyer appears to have steadied the ship but there could be more problems coming down the line for them amid an investigation by the FA for a spending spree that brought in 23 players last summer.

Bowyer has brought his ex-Blackpool frontman Jake Beesley in to solve Burton’s goalscoring problems and the big man has hit the ground running with a strike against Sheffield United and a double against Derby in pre-season.

He could make a difference against a Stags side that has tailed off after a good start to their friendly programme. Mansfield showed that scoring should not be a problem for them when they came back from three goals down to draw 3-3 with Middlesbrough, but they were unconvincing in a 1-0 defeat to Oxford.

Goals were on the menu wwhen the sides met early on last season, another 3-3 draw, and it is noteworthy that five of the last six clashes of these Midlands clubs have featured at least three strikes.

Mansfield’s last 10 league matches in 2024-25 went over the 2.5-goal mark with an average of 4.2 goals per game recorded during that run.
