Simeone’s side struggles on the road

Atletico Madrid’s awful away form could prevent them from taking all three points from Sunday’s La Liga trip to relegation-threatened Alaves.

Diego Simeone’s side suffered more road woe on Tuesday night when Borussia Dortmund produced a stirring comeback to overturn a 4-3 aggregate deficit in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Simeone seemed to have the Germans just where he wanted when his side levelled at 2-2 on the night following some shrewd half-time changes. But Atleti’s away-day blues returned after that to make it nine defeats in their last 15 games outside of Estadio Civitas Metropolitano.

Alaves can give a good account of themselves 

And Simeone may have trouble raising his players’ chins off the floor in time for this trip to Vitoria. Atleti have failed to deliver a win in four of their last five matches that have followed a European clash.

Alaves are not in great overall form with four defeats in their last five league games, but Luis Garcia’s side have lost only two of their last four home games and pushed Real Madrid close on their visit to Estadio de Mendizorroza just before Christmas.
