Atletico Madrid to Win

Reason for tip

Celtic are at the top of the Scottish Premiership but their Champions League experience has been disappointing this season and they look set for a third successive group defeat against Atletico Madrid, who are brimming with confidence after their 3-0 win over Celta Vigo at the weekend

Atletico Madrid 2-1

Reason for tip

Both teams have scored in Celtic’s last four matches, including their 2-1 home Champions League defeat to Lazio, so while the Spaniards can utilise their superior attacking ability to claim a win, it would not be a surprise if they conceded so go for a 2-1 away win.

Celtic vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

  • Atletico Madrid have won their last six matches
  • Seven of Atletico’s last nine games have featured at least three goals
  • Celtic have conceded in their last 14 home Champions League home group matches

Spaniards could be too strong

Celtic have taken the initiative in the Scottish Premiership title race, but, as is so often case, it has been a different story in the Champions League.

Brendan Rodgers’s side have lost both of their opening group games against Feyenoord and Lazio and will still be smarting from conceding an injury-time winner when they entertained the Italians.

That means a win against Atletico Madrid is crucial if they are to even claim a place in the Europa League after Christmas, but they face a team in a rich vein of form.

The Spaniard have won all of their last six matches and have four points in the group already, so there looks every chance they will build on the 3-0 victory they posted at Celta Vigo on Saturday.

Bhoys can still make their mark

French start Antoine Griezmann scored a hat-trick in that game, but Celtic possess enough attacking ability to at least threaten and they can score a goal.

Rodgers’s side have scored 15 goals in their last five league matches and they will have to go forward in search of something from the game to keep their group hopes alive.

They are sure to be spurred on by a vociferous Parkhead crowd and could breakthrough, even if they are unable to do enough to win, so a 2-1 away victory may be of interest to correct-score punters.
