Both of these sides have been in poor form since the Belgian topflight split at the end of the regular season. Mechelen have taken three points from their four matches in the Europa Conference League mini-group, whilst Saturday’s hosts have mustered just a single point. Winning this group already seems a bridge too far for Charleroi and Mechelen, with Gent having quickly opened a 11- and 12-point gap respectively between the two teams.

It may be worth siding with the hosts in this one. Charleroi have lost twice at home in 2022 and they finished the regular season in front of their home fans by keeping three clean sheets on the bounce. In stark contrast to their hosts on Saturday, Mechelen’s away form in 2022 has left a lot to be desired. Wouter Vrancken’s side have lost their last three games on the road, a run which extends to no win in their last five.

Whilst it is a tentative selection, I will just about side with the hosts and put-up Charleroi in the outright market as the main selection for Saturday’s game. Two home defeats this calendar year is good going and the visitors are in dreadful form on their travels, in what is somewhat a dead-rubber I am happy to be with Charleroi.
