Chelsea vs Newcastle Predictions
Chelsea’s last ditch equaliser against Manchester United last weekend saw Guud Hiddink’s unbeaten run at Chelsea continue for another week at least. Diego Costa scored in injury time to take Chelsea to 11 matches in all competitions without defeat.
But they have been struggling to actually win matches. Only five of these 11 outings have resulted in a Chelsea victory, a record which goes some way to explaining their continued occupancy in the bottom half of the Premier League.
The current Premier League champions come into this match in 13th position with 30 points from their first 25 matches. A win on Saturday could send them up to 10th in the table, whilst a defeat could send them down to 16th.
Newcastle managed to drag themselves out of the Premier League relegation zone last weekend when they beat West Brom 1-0 at home.
They have a one point advantage over 18th placed Norwich, but the improving Newcastle will just be happy to have escaped the bottom three after their January spending spree.
Newcastle’s record since their influx of signings has improved. They have now won two and drawn one of their last five matches in the Premier League.
Despite Chelsea’s struggles against a solid Manchester United defence last weekend, they have generally been quite impressive at Stamford Bridge since Hiddink’s reign began. They have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven home matches, with four of these seven ending with three or more goals in total.
Newcastle themselves have improved in front of goal though. They have managed to find the back of the net in four of their last five Premier League games and have seen goalfests play out on all four of these occasions.
This makes a high scoring game look quite likely to me, and odds of 13/20 for Over 2.5 Match Goals look fair to me. I’m also going for a 3-1 Chelsea win at 12/1.
