Costa Rica vs Brazil Predictions
Brazil’s football public has still not forgiven the side for what was an admittedly unforgivable 7-1 thrashing against Germany in the World Cup Semi Finals last year. Since then the players have been very highly motivated in every game, which has helped contribute to 10 wins out of 10 in friendlies however when it really mattered in Copa America they came up short again.
A defeat to Colombia in the group stage and a penalty shoot-out defeat to Paraguay in the Quarter Finals of Copa America brought the second Dunga honeymoon crashing to a halt. They still have some talented players but perhaps not by the standards of the great Brazilian sides of the past and just don’t seem to be capable of coping with the big games against other even reasonably strong sides.
However this isn’t a big game and the opposition isn’t likely to be that strong. Given their excellent friendly record and the fact that Neymar is back after he missed the final games of Copa America through suspension, they are well capable of winning here to nil against a Costa Rica side who don’t score many at. The odds for that are favourable too at 13/10.
The game will be played on neutral territory but in front of a large Brazilian contingent in New Jersey, who are likely to turn it into a virtual home game and it will be tough for the Central Americans. Costa Rica have gone backwards since their impressive showing in Brazil last summer and haven’t won any of their nine matches in 2015. They drew all their games in a weak group which included Canada and El Salvador at the Gold Cup in July before a 1-0 Quarter Final defeat to Mexico.
Brazil might not be world-beaters at the moment but they are still good enough to put away Costa Rica without much fuss. An avalanche of goals is highly unlikely here as Costa Rica are still well organised defensively but lack potency in the final third.
Therefore a professional 2-0 win for the 5 times World Champions can be backed at 6/1. It might do little to improve the mood of their demanding public but it would go a small way to consigning the disappointment of another big tournament failure to the history books.
