      Tip Reasoning

The West Midlands club have been a big fish in a small pond for several years now but with their money and stadium troubles mostly behind them, this could finally be the year they put in a serious challenge to return to the Second tier.

They have won 3 of their opening 4 league games so confidence will be high going into this game despite a 2-1 defeat at fellow bright starters Walsall last time out. Coventry have won both games at home so far this season so will be confident of making it three out of three against newly promoted Southend and they are available at generous odds of 6/5 to do just that.

You would almost expect Coventry to be odds on here especially given that Southend have failed to score in all of their last four games and have only 2 points and 1 goal to show for their efforts this season. Phil Brown’s side were promoted in the play-offs last year but already this is looking like a season of struggling against the drop and they may find it tough going away to one of the promotion favourites.

It might only be early days but the Sky Blues are building on some solid foundations that they founded at the end of last season and it is just one defeat in 10 league games for them now. What they lacked last term was a genuine goal threat but Coventry have scored 10 times in their 4 League One games this season and with on-loan 18 year old Alan Armstrong netting half of them, they possess a real talent up top now and one of the most exciting young players in the division.

Therefore a City win here is likely against a Southend side that are just not looking dangerous in the final third. The live TV cameras provide a little extra motivation at this level so everyone will be keen to perform and it is hard to see the visitors caving in and they have only suffered narrow defeats so far.

Coventry are therefore good value at 10/1 to win this one 2-0 and it is unlikely to be more than that.
